For the past two weeks, the Hampstead Academy Maker Space and Art Studio have been lively with activity in preparation for a Lunar New Year Celebration. The Chinese program worked closely to script a Dragon Dance and even the youngest students learned a Chinese New Year song. Using traditional bamboo techniques art teacher Andy Moerlein learned in residence in Taiwan, the students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth built a 40-foot long dragon. Each grade contributed during their class period to complete the school-wide project. Students used sewing machines, hand stitching, and hot glue to piece together hand-painted scales and bright design details onto their monumental jolly dragon. In brisk morning sun, the entire school gathered to parade their creation, sing and welcome in the New Year.
